The Loons kick into gear with power and style in our production of Macbeth for the Christchurch Arts Festival.

It's a vicious and feral play. Bitter, brooding and dark.

This production is played out in the rubble of a crumbling state with the set designed by Tony Geddes and the text brutally slashed by Joe Bennett. Following the success of The Butler and Berlin Burlesque, Mike Friend has put together an exciting mix of actors, designers and musicians to create a work amidst the ruins of Lyttelton.

Featuring original music by Hamish Oliver and Anita Clark, with David Ladderman, Toni Jones, Danny Lee Smith, Brian Rick, Tom Trevella, Skye Broberg, Anthea Blanco, Lizzie Tollemache, Darryl Cribb, Darren Tatom, Shaun Weatherall, Albi Paterson and Sienna Friend, this is an experience like no other.

Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand walked down London St and encountered what he described as "a symbol of the community's optimism".

As he passed a demolished site once home to the popular Volcano restaurant, he was treated to an impromptu rehearsal of the last act of Macbeth.

The play's original venue, The Loons, was destroyed in the quake and it will now be staged on the ruins of several London St shops during the Christchurch Arts Festival this month.

"I think that was a wonderful symbol of optimism. This is a place that has had some terrible damage, but in a way ... the people of Lyttelton are getting on with recovery," Satyanand said.
