The Loons and the Earthquakes

At the start of 2011 The Loons was a thriving business producing new theatre works, providing children's workshops by day and an entertainment venue by night.

In February 2011, the Loons was damaged by at 6.3 earthquake that devastated Lyttelton and Christchurch.

The Loons theatre was badly damaged, but with help from the performers and workers from the theatre the clean-up allowed the venue to reopen at half capacity.

The Loons was joined by the now homeless ‘Lyttelton Coffee Company’ reborn as Samo, who operated out of The Loons during the day.  The Loons continued as an entertainment venue for music, fundraisers and local groups to perform and plans were made to repair the damaged building.

In June 2011 a 6.1 earthquake struck and the theatre was further damaged and ‘red stickered’ rendering it unusable.

The Loons theatre has since been closed and restoration and strengthening has begun, but bureaucracy and dwindling finances have meant repairs have all but ceased.  There is no projected date for reopening at this stage leaving the resident theatre group homeless.

No funds have been forthcoming via the government due to the perceived ‘localised area’ that the Loons services.  The theatre group is in danger of being disbanded due to lack of support and inability to generate income.

The Loons need your help.

If you are willing to provide a donation of any type this will help the Loons Circus Theatre Company to continue.  We are hoping to tour NZ, or find an alternative venue in the interim, but all this requires financial assistance.  Can you help?

Thank you.

The Loons is no longer operational meaning performers cannot generate needed funds to help keep the company going.
